"Here Comes the Weekend" "The Great Escape"

"Where Did the Beat Go?" is the twelfth track from P!nk's sixth studio album, The Truth About Love. It was written by P!nk, Billy Mann, Jon Keep, and Steve Daly. It was produced by Mann and Tracklacers. Some fans have incorrectly referred to the song as "Afterglow", much to the irritation of P!nk.

"Where Did the Beat Go?" is only one of two songs (the other being "Here Comes the Weekend") from the standard edition of The Truth About Love that were never performed live (except for her final show of the tour in Las Vegas she did perform "Where Did the Beat Go?" with Carey and her daughter attending, just slightly off stage). She said (while looking at Carey) that he probably hates this song, and he smiled back and shook his head.

Background[]

P!nk said the song's main subject is affairs. "It's just about how easy it is to... fantasize when not being loved for, I think, both sides. Everyone's always like, aww, the male cheats, but I think women cheat more than men. We just don't get caught." [1]

Many believe that P!nk wrote the song about her husband, Carey Hart, and more specifically, their separation and what had gone on during the period of time when they were separated in 2007 and 2008. [2] One site even went so far as to state that the song was supposed to imply P!nk had had an affair during her separation from Hart, although this is highly unlikely. [3]

Lyrics[]

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Ba da ba bum
Oh oh oh oh
Ba da ba bum
Ba da ba bum
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I can hear planes flyin' over my head
Just hours before you occupied my bed
In our darkness we conjured up sunlight
In our haste, our need, our thirst we lost our sight
But I was inspired tracing the lines on your face
To the poetry the first time I heard your name
When I trip from your lips my heart was like a kick-drum
And it silenced the guilt, I wasn't raised to hurt anyone

Uh oh, does he know
That I'm lyin' in the afterglow
That I'm lyin' but I can't go, can't say no
Make him think he's crazy
While his paranoia grows
What he should be asking
Is where did our love ago
Then I wouldn't be baskin'
In another man's afterglow

Where did the beat go?
Where is the beat?
Where did the beat go?

So how do I justify to the judge and the jury
The voices in my head that caused this fury
Never had to play with matches to start a fire
But it got so cold and I thought I'd forgotten desire
I was your concubine and then your Madonna
You couldn't see anything beyond your baby's mama
How long is lonely supposed to last?
I was naked and waiting for you to come back

Uh oh, does he know
That I'm lyin' in the afterglow
That I'm lyin' but I can't go, can't say no
Make him think he's crazy
While his paranoia grows
What he should be asking
Is where did our love ago
Then I wouldn't be baskin'
In another man's afterglow

Where did the beat go?
Where is the beat?
Where did the beat go?

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

There's a cause and effect although I took the steps
I dove off the bridge cause I had nothing left
All I ever wanted was you
And in the absence of you
I fell through

Uh oh, does he know
That I'm lyin' in the afterglow
That I'm lyin' but I can't go, can't say no
Make him think he's crazy
While his paranoia grows
What he should be asking
Is where did our love ago
Then I wouldn't be baskin'
In another man's afterglow

Where did the beat go?
Where is the beat?
Where did the beat go?
Where did the love go?
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Where did the beat go?
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Where did the love go?
